Monday Night Microlite20 - The Jungle Awaits!

   Another night of Microlite20 and our party is;

Davrry - Gnome Druid (Ross N.)
Grey - Elven Cleric (Genny C.)
Hallow Ancyn - Human Fighter (Mike C.)
Logo Redbranch - Halfling Rogue (Keith C.)
StormFox - Davrry's animal companion

   When we last left the party they were passing through the magical gate that the Priests of Sharatuir had conjured and arrived back at the Temple of Sharatuir. The priests bade them farewell as they returned to their quarters to rest and recuperate promising to return tomorrow and relay any information they had learned from their trip.

   After three days rest the party returned to the Temple of Sharatuir and gave their report about the events around the town of Glen near Mistledale and the keep called Galath's Roost. The party had not acquired any wealth during their foray and asked for some rations for the each member of the party in return for their efforts. Anorac, the High Priest, of the Priests of Woodcliff granted each party member a weeks worth of trail rations and 3 gold pieces for their effort. He also informed the group that they did not require them to return to the town of Glen but instead wished them to undertake a task of importance to,  an area far south of the city of Sharatuir.

   There were few details but Anorac explained that word had reached his people of a possible growing threat to the city of Sharatuir in the form a cult that was recruiting locally. All he knew was that members of this cult were infiltrating Sharatuir and gathering people to join their cause. They served someone named Sevross and used an emblem of a snake for their cause. His priests had found a power center of this cult to lie far to the south of Sharatuir and he wished to, once again, use the Priests "gate" ability to send the party to investigate.

   The party agreed to meet Anorac and the priests the next morning and they would pass through the Priests magical gate leading somewhere to the far south of Sharatuir to investigate this new threat. They departed the Temple of Sharatui and were heading down Market Street when a young boy stopped them. He told them that he was sent by Vita, who owned a small shop near Market Square, to come and meet her. The party agreed and followed the young boy to Vita's shop.

   Here the party meant the renowned Vita, provider of herbal items and diviner of a person's future, for a small fee. Vita came to tell the party that she knew of their search for information regarding this new possible cult uprising and that the Priests of Sharatuir were sending them away to investigate. She did not wish to interfere with this search but hoped that if the party did discover a certain dagger, made of a giant snake's fang and hilted in gold, would bring the item to here for a modest "reward" and the use of her services for their entire lives as needed. The party agreed to keep their eyes open for such an item and began to depart for the Green Dragon Inn, or "The Wedge" as it was called among locals because of its odd shape, where they resided.

   Before they departed Vita approached each one of the group in turn and offered some mysterious prognostication;

   To Logo the Halfling she said, "Logo Redbranch, you often seek a quiet place around people to glean the best avenue for your endeavors but give yourself away with your quick tongue. While your quick tongue is usually keen on insight you must find when that keen insight will serve you least."

   To Davrry the Gnome she said, "Davvry, you stood true when the danger of the mighty Krenshar were afoot and others fled, do not be afraid to stand true again as the gods favor you."

   To Hallow Ancyn she said, "Hallow, you fought with the Heroes of Woodcliff, you follow a Hero of Woodcliff and some day you too shall be a Hero of Woodcliff, just do not think that those who sass you truly do."

   To Grey she said, "Gil-Lindar, you keep your secrets in the shadows, but beware, there are those that dwell in the shadows."

    And with Vita's words the party departed for the Green Dragon Inn. Early the next morning they made their way back to the Temple of Sharatuir and met with Anorac who escorted them to the temples basement where a magical blue gate was created and the group passed through.

   They found themselves in a vast jungle. The air was heavy with moisture and the vegetation was enormous compared to what they were used to in their cooler climate. With insects buzzing and biting at them they found themselves walking along a brackish river in a dense jungle. They hadn't been traveling for more than an hour when they were stopped by two individuals garbed in light sashes wrapped around themselves and wielding machete-like swords and staves.

   The party was asked why they were there and responded that they were looking for a young man who recently had joined up with a cult and his parents wished him home. The lightly-garbed two asked them where they had come from and after being told that the party was from Sharatuir and had traveled by magic, called out to their hidden friends and attacked the party.

    Logo swinging his dual-wielded hammers and Grey with devastating crossbow bolt after devastating crossbow bolt (two crits) managed to drive the lightly-clad enemy back. The light-garbed group summoned two huge snakes that appeared as if by magic in front of the party but they were dealt with swiftly by the party. In the end the last of these snake summoning people were overrun and and sent to meet their snake god.

Monday Night Microlite20 - To TPK or not to TPK...

    Another night of Microlite20 and our party is;

Davrry - Gnome Druid (Ross N.)
Grey - Elven Cleric (Genny C.)
Hallow Ancyn - Human Fighter (MIke C.)
Logo Redbranch - Halfling Rogue (Keith C.)
Stormfox - Dacrry's animal companion

    When we last left the party they were scouting out the possible cavernous directions they could go in. There was a passageway to their southeast and one to their south with some strange vines growing out of the cavern floor and climbing up the cavern walls to a point where a little light showed through a crack in the cavern's ceiling.

   A couple of initial attempts were made to see if the vines were alive by tossing a rock and then firing a crossbow bolt at them but no reaction was noted. Logo took point again and proceeded walking through the vine-filled area. As he passed through the vegetation a spindly vine reached out and grabbed hold of his leg and thigh. It pulled him off of his feet and swung him into the cavern floor with a smack! The party jumped into action.

   Hallow ran to the Halfing's aid, swinging a mighty strike at the vine and hitting, but failed to free his companion. Grey the Elevn Cleric and Davrry the Gnome Druid fired a bolt and sling stone at the vines but were unable to hit their targets.

   Logo was lifted and sent smashing into the caverns floor again by the vine entangling him and Hallow was thrown into the caverns wall by a vine that grabbed and held fast to him. Both Logo and Hallow's bodies went limp as they lost consciousness. The Halfling looked very badly off (down and bleeding with 1 round to live) and the party tried desperately to save him.

   Davrry moved into the vine-filled cavern and cast cure light wounds on Logo, stopping his bleeding just in the nick of time. Grey fired off a crossbow bolt at the vines entangling Hallow but the bolt missed and went skittering across the stone floor. The vines holding Hallow slowly shambled towards Grey.

   Davrry smashed the vines gripping Logo with his quarterstaff and then dragged the Halfling north towards his companions. Grey fired off another crossbow bolt at the vines holding Hallow but again the bolt missed, hitting only stone wall. The vines holding Hallow again shambled towards Grey and as they approached they tried to ensnare her as well but missed!

   Grey shifted and fired off a crossbow bolt once more at the vines holding Hallow but, again, the bolt missed (three bad rolls in row!). The vine ambled towards the Elven Cleric once more and tried to ensnare her but missed! Davrry pulled out his sling and swung it above his head letting a sling stone fly...and it hit (a crit!) and the vine holding Hallow went limp.

   The party rushed to the surface level of the keep and made refuge in a nook in the dilapidated walls of the place. They made it through the night unscathed and decided in the morning that it would be more prudent to look around the out-lying areas of the keep.

   Spending the early part of the next day outside the keep the party searched through copse, glen, and groves of trees. In the end they discovered a couple of things. On a hillock south of the keep was a path made by booted feet and shod horse that seemingly stopped at the top of the hill and proceeded no longer, and, that nearby to this mystery several Drow had camped recently and tried to hide the fact by burying their camp under the turf.

   This left the party with new questions as to what was going on in the area. As they pondered this new information the gate, promised to appear in three days time by the Priests of Sharatuir, appeared. The party nodded to each other and passed through, looking for some healing and to pass on the discoveries they had made...

Monday Night Microlite20 - The Party Invades the Keep!

   Monday Night Microlite20 found the players and me kicking off a new campaign ater a foray into some Monday Night OSR action for the last few months. While we enjoyed our Old School Campaign we looked forward to getting back to M20 where it had all started forever ago it seems.

   This time around we have;

Davrry - Gnome Druid (Ross N.)
Grey - Elven Cleric (Genny C.)
Hallow Ancen - Human Fighter (Mike C.)
Logo Redbranch - Halfling Rogue (Keith C.)
"Eagle" - Davrry's animal companion, an Eagle, who actually has a name now. It's something "fox" but I can't remember what it was, sorry Ross!

   Things started off with a return to the village of Glen after a nasty fight with some Krenshars last Monday. Before the party could get back on the road to return to town however, they were approached by two Elves. Simimar and Lathai were looking for a couple of friends who had been out scouting the area several days before. They had, sadly, found the body of one of their two friends but could find no trace of the other. Desperate they had come out of their hiding and asked the party if they had seen any sign of their friend. The party had not and, having only first been to the area the night before, had no real information as to the goings-on around the keep. The Elves were able to tell the party that they had seen signs of horses but were unsure of the riders themselves. They did not think that the riders were Drow as that would be highly unlikely. The party asked them to join up and together they would search the keep and look for signs of the Elve's friends but the two declined explaining that they could make better time on their own and would not get side-tracked by a search of the keep. They said their goodbyes and moved on.

   After quick one-night's stay at The Sagging Twig and Acorn and a resupply at the local store it was back to the Keep called Galath's Roost.

   The party arrived back at the keep around late afternoon and decided to get right to searching the keeps interior. They cautiously made their way into the keep's courtyard and then peeked into the few rooms still standing after many, many years. They passed on a sinkhole on the east side of the keep, staying as far away from the hole as possible, and discovered a stairway heading down below the keep and a strange pile of dirt, sand and debris piled up against the southeastern side of the keep's wall. There were three human-sized holes leading into the mound and Logo, the Halfling, went to investigate. Before he could do more than have a listen and a look, two giant ants scurried out and attacked.

   Logo managed a decent hit on one of the ants and Hallow dispatched it with a swift stab from his blade. Logo also got in the first strike on the second ant, while Grey sent a warning crossbow bolt shot up into the air, over the keeps wall and into the forest beyond, leaving Davrry to finish it off with a Produce Flame spell and then a deft shot with his sling (a crit!).

   The party debated and then figured entering the ant hill might not be their best choice at the moment so they moved back to the stairwell. They descended the stairs and lit a torch. Before them lay a large, irregular cavern with a large pool of greenish-blue water.

   Ancen gasped and declared that something moved on the far side of the pool. The party was skeptical of the fighter, him not being the most perceptive member of the party, and they tried to allay his fears that it was probably only the torch light flickering off the pool. Davrry's eagle, circling the large cavern, screeched a warning as he flew over the same area.

   The party had a closer look and sure enough there was a small bluish, almost transparent creature, with bluish and nearly transparent wings, crawling across the water. They hailed it and made an offer of some water, poured from a waterskin, into the pool. The creature called for them to "Halt," and "Who goes there?" The party replied that they were at the keep to search for the bandits terrorizing Mistledale. The water creature sat on top of the water, its knees pulled up to its chest and it's arms clasped around it's legs, saying "What do the living seek in the sepulcher of Galath the betrayed? Betrayed by small-minded men, glory seekers and snivelers!"

   Ancen muttered aloud, thinking the creature was sassing them.

   The creature stood on top of the water, its wings dripping water, and it's arms folded across it's chest. As it slowly, and most dramatically, began to sink down into the water it spoke, "The treasure of Galath is for Galath alone, but know this! There is a winged creature who lairs above, and it mocks me, day and night! Bring me the head of the beast, and one-tenth share of the treasure shall be yours!" And with that, it was gone, somewhere below the quiet waters of the pool.

   The party spoke quietly among each other and decided to continue their search, giving wide-berth to the pool.

   Lead by Logo the party search out two more large caverns with passages leading out of them. At the far end of one passage they could make out vines growing on the floor and walls. They passed on this and moved to another passage. This one seemed devoid of anything and they chose this direction....

   ...and there we ended for the night.

Monday Night Microlite20 - "It's a Bird, it's a Plane, no it is a Bird!"

   Monday Night Microlite20 found the players and me kicking off a new campaign after a foray into some Monday Night OSR action for the last few months. While we enjoyed our Old School Campaign we looked forward to getting back to M20 where it had all started forever ago it seems.

   This time around we have;

Davrry - Gnome Druid (Ross N.)
Grey - Elven Cleric (Genny)
Hallow Ancen - Human Fighter (Mike C.)
Logo Redbranch - Halfling Rogue (Keith C.)
"Eagle" - Davrry's animal companion, an Eagle

   We're playing Skip Williams "The Raiders of Galath's Roost" found in an old issue of Dungeon Magazine, #87 to be exact. So if your a player in the game, don't go looking! And if you ever plan on playing the adventure be warned, spoilers follow!

   The group met each other in the Temple of Sharatuir, Sharatuir being the capital city of a realm not well defined due to the encroachment of whatever bands of humanoids reside in the far west. The Priests of Sharatuir were recruiting whatever parties of individuals would undertake their missions to help destroy areas where unrest stirred, with chaos soon to follow. The Priests themselves, now only a handful remaining, had deemed it against their law to send any of their own on these quests where their numbers might fall even lower and eventually to none. Their pact with these groups of adventurers was that they would provide travel to the location by way of a magical gate and also return, three days hence, by way again of their magical gate. Any healing needed by the group would be performed by the Priests of Sharatuir and a return to the same or another area needing cleansing would be provided. The parties would be allowed to keep all wealth found, save any items of truly evil intent...

   And so the adventurers found themselves transported to a place just outside a village called Glen. They, being adventurers, proceeded immediately to the local Tavern and Inn, the Sagging Twig and Acorn as it was. There they met Raychek the Dwarven proprietor of the establishment who could only tell them that the party's Gnome was too nosy and that nightime raids were becoming more persistent and closer to town. He said Drow were suspected but also that this was doubted and that some other group on horseback were responsible, and that this was doubted and that the perpetrator was the ghost of Galath the Bandit who resided in the old keep some miles northeast of town.

   The party opted to try the old keep and headed out without delay. On the way they questioned some furriers returning to Glen with the days catch. The furriers could only confirm that somebody was raiding the outskirts of Glen and that they were sometimes on horseback. The party moved on.

   Late in the evening, just before dusk the party found the old keep. It was decided that they would set up camp in a copse of trees and watch the old keep throughout the night. The first watch past quietly for Grey and Logo as they watched the front of the keep while wrapped up in their bedrolls against the cold. Hallow Ancen and Davrry took second watch and weren't so lucky. Davrry's animal companion "Eagle" was off scouting another area when the attack occurred. Two giant cats appeared out of nowhere looking like a cross between a wolf and a hyena.

   They leaped at the two adventurers on guard, Hallow taking a hit but dealing a near killing strike in return, and Davrry rolling out of the way of a vicious bite. Logo and Grey rose quickly from their slumber and joined the fray but nobody could land a decisive blow, well, except the wolf-like creatures. Davrry was hit twice once lightly and once not so much so. The creature nearly killed by Hallow reared back and let loose a shrill and piercing scream. Logo, Grey and Hallow turned away at the frightening scene before them and bolted leaving Davrry the Gnome Druid alone with the two beasts. Davrry stood his ground and landed two well-placed staff hits on one of the beasts leaving it and the one hit by Hallow very battered. Moments later Davrry killed the first of the two but he fell to the second and as he toppled towards the ground he called to his Eagle, "Eagle," and Eagle swept out of the sky driving down towards his master's enemy and squeezed talons deep into its hide before lifting off and rending the beast's flesh. The beast dropped to the ground.

   The other party members returned shortly, after having overcome the fearful screech of the creatures, and finding Davrrys lying there began administering aid. A Cure spell from Grey got him back on his feet barely but was enough to keep him from death.

   The party rested for a couple of hours and when daylight was full began the return trip to Glen to rest and recuperate.
